375 Years of Grace: Living the Flame of Love in the Spirit of Communion

On 15 th October, 2025 we joyfully celebrate 375 years of God’s faithfulness. Our hearts overflow with gratitude for the countless blessings poured upon our beloved Congregation- the Sisters of St. Joseph, founded by Fr. Jean-Pierre Médaille, S.J. in the 17th century. From humble beginnings in France to a vibrant presence on five continents, and a strong and growing mission in India, our story is one of faith, courage, and enduring love.Rooted in the Trinity, Inspired by St. Ignatius. Our Spirituality is deeply Trinitarian, drawing life from the communion of the Father, Son,and Holy Spirit — the perfect model of unity in diversity. Rooted in Ignatian Spirituality, we seek to find God in all things and to live a life of discernment, generosity, and interior freedom. Our Charism of COMMUNION — union with God, self, creation and with one another give direction and meaning to all our ministries and relationships. It reminds us that every moment of our lives can become Eucharistic — a living expression of God’s self-giving love.A Journey of Grace and Adaptation Through the centuries, our Congregation has responded to the call of the Spirit to read the signs of the times and serve according to the needs of each age and place. From the early days of caring for the sick, orphans, and the poor, to today’s involvement in education, health care, social work, pastoral and frontline ministries, we continue to be women of communion and compassion in a divided world.

We are known for our simplicity, adaptability, and availability — women ready to serve wherever God calls. Our Congregation does not have a common dress code, a symbol of our openness and readiness to inculturate — to live, eat, speak, and serve among the people to whom we are sent.Whether in villages, towns or cities, in schools or hospitals, we seek to become one with those around us, blending faith with culture, and witnessing through our very presence the inclusive love of God.A Community of Intercultural Harmony. In India from the year 1854, our Congregation has flourished through the witness of sisters from various states and languages, living together as one heart and one soul. This intercultural unity in various states reflect our founder’s dream — a community that transcends barriers of culture, language, and race, where each sister is a reflection of God’s beauty and diversity.

We live daily the miracle of communion — celebrating our differences while being united in our mission of love. This intercultural life is a prophetic sign to our divided world that true unity is possible in Christ.

The Hidden Way of Love Our beloved founder, Fr. Jean-Pierre Médaille, envisioned his daughters living a hidden life, known not by titles or honors, but by their humble service and deep love. He desired no worldly fame for his sisters — only that their lives might silently radiate Christ’s compassion.

In this spirit, we continue to live a life of contemplation in action, being the dear neighbor to all, and witnessing to God’s tender presence in the ordinariness of life. Our hiddenness is not obscurity, but a way of living the Gospel quietly, faithfully, and joyfully.

Our Shared Legacy The Sisters of St. Joseph of Lyons, Annecy, Chambery and a dozen more all trace their roots to the same founder, sharing the same charism of unity and love. Across nations and centuries, this sacred bond continues to unite us in spirit and mission.Though our expressions of ministry may differ, our shared heritage keeps us deeply connected as one great family in the heart of the Church.

As we, the Tanmaya Province, joined in this jubilee celebration, we relived our very existence through our Community Week. Each day was a renewal of our spirit — reading, reflecting, and rejoicing through the pictures, videos, and writings shared on various social media platforms. Participating in online prayer services, tableau, and daily inspirational quotes rekindled in us the living spirit of our Founder, Fr. Médaille. This year’s celebration was so lively and spiritually nourishing, helping us to experience once again the beauty of our vocation and the vitality of our charism. We thank God for all that He has been to us and for His faithful love that continues to sustain our Congregation through the ages. A Song of Thanksgiving .As we look back on 375 years of grace, we stand in awe of God’s faithfulness. From a small spark in Le Puy, France, the flame of love has spread across the world — touching lives, healing wounds, and proclaiming God’s unconditional love.Today, we recommit ourselves to walk forward in faith — to be women of the Eucharist, ofcommunion, and of hope. With hearts grateful and eyes fixed on Christ, we echo the wordsof our founder:

“Let us be wholly God’s and wholly for the dear neighbor.”

May the spirit of Fr. Médaille, the protection of St. Joseph, and the love of the Triune God continue to guide us as we move into the future — one in heart, one in mission, and one in love.

“With hearts full of gratitude, we continue the journey — living COMMUNION in the spirit of our Founder.”
